Why is it Important to Take Steps After a Tarot Reading?

Most of us know hindsight is 20/20 and have experienced this multiple times in our lives.  The sudden turning on of the lightbulb above your head that comes with certain knowledge and understanding of the whole picture.  It can be a glorious moment, a time when the fog clears and you possess crystal clear clarity of why something happened the way it did.

The same experience can be had after a tarot reading.  Tarot is an instrument used to access your subconscious, the part of you that is truly authentic.  During a reading, you are receiving a direct message from your unique truth and because of limiting beliefs, you may not understand what it means.

What is needed is time to process and absorb this message.   Tarot shines light on what is blocking you and gives you ways to take action.  However, if you simply do nothing other than receive what you are being told without taking action, you will have wasted your time and money.  This is why most tarot readers advise to wait at least a month before getting another reading on the same situation.  The time delay

gives you an opportunity to take stock of where you are right now, how you can move forward and allows time to move forward.

What Steps to Take Immediately After a Tarot Reading

Process and Absorb

Having a tarot reading done is a big deal.  Tarot is a direct pipeline to your intuition and can be a life changer if you use it correctly.  Sometimes, you will not understand the message or feel that it is completely wrong.  I want you to know this is normal.  You must give yourself time to fully comprehend your reading.

Limiting beliefs have long resided in our consciousness, showing up in the way we present ourselves to the world.  These beliefs are ideas you have decided were true for you based on experiences you have had in your lifetime.  Most of them were also formed before you were 6 years old.  This means you are operating on outdated, childish rules.  When you get a tarot reading, a lot of times these beliefs are coloring your perception of the world and you may not be ready to hear your own truth.

If you receive a reading that does not resonate or feel right to you, I urge you not to dismiss it.  Allow time to take an honest look at where you may be blindfolding yourself.  Work with your shadow self and take a closer look at what ideas may be holding you back from your greatest potential.

Write in a  Tarot Journal

Like it or not, writing is an excellent way to gain greater understanding of the thoughts in your head.  Journaling immediately after a tarot reading gives you an opportunity to capture how you feel as well as your initial reactions.  By getting it all on paper, it gives you a chance to clear your mind, uncover what may be hindering you from seeing the intended message and allows for future review.

The best way to journal is however you feel called.  There is no set or approved method, simply start writing, drawing, jotting words on paper.  Do not censor anything that comes up, put your thinking mind aside and let your pen do its thing. If you feel yourself resisting or critiquing what you are putting down, this is a big clue that there is a limiting belief surfacing.  Take a deeper look into why you are resisting and where that belief came from.

Create an Action Plan

My most favorite part about tarot is it gives the analytical and organized part of my brain a definitive track to run on.  For those of you who, like me, have no problem getting into the dirty work of digging up what you need to improve but struggle when it comes to the how to do it part, this message is for you.  Tarot gives you an action plan.

I am pretty sure this is what made me fall in love with the amazingness of this tool.  Finally I had the checklist I was looking for that told me how to get from point A to point B.  A massive win in my book.  When you have a tarot reading, the light shines on your path.  You see what is standing in your way and how you can get past it.  However, it doesn’t end there.  You must take the information you have been given and make it make sense for where you are in your life right now.

After your reading, go through and look for your next steps.  Write them down in your tarot journal and next to each one, record a specific, measurable and attainable goal.  Make sure your goal is relevant to what you want to achieve and give yourself a time limit to hold yourself accountable.  Know that your goals do not have to be rigid, allow them to grow and expand with you.

Wait a Month for Another Reading

As I mentioned above, most tarot readers encourage you to take the time to dig into your reading and won’t give you another one on the same situation within a month.  Don’t give into the temptation to ask for another reading to clarify what the original message is.  Tarot is simply one tool in your toolbox for creating the life you desire.  You must know how to use it correctly or it won’t work the way it is intended.

When you ask for another reading too soon, you muddy the water and make it even more difficult to understand the meaning and action to take.  Therefore, the way I suggest using your tool is to give yourself time to come up with clarity on your own.  And yes, sometimes that means it is not an instant answer.

Don’t Judge Yourself

No matter what your reading tells you, I encourage you to receive it with an open mind.  Sometimes when we hear something we don’t want to hear, we have a tendency to judge ourselves for any personal failures we perceive in our reading.  Please don’t do this.

Every single situation you find yourself in is an opportunity for growth.  This once again goes back to your limiting beliefs and shadow self (the part of you that you don’t want to acknowledge).  By understanding that you are human and make mistakes (just like every single other human on this planet), you give yourself the gift of grace.  You are not perfect nor will you ever be.  You are doing the best you can with the knowledge you have right now and as Maya Angelou says, when you know better you do better.

If you find yourself judging yourself for anything when you receive your reading, find the “gift in the garbage” – the lesson you are meant to learn from it.  Try and view it as an opportunity for growth rather than proof of failure.

Listen to Your Intuition

As an intuitive tarot reader, I simply pass on the messages that are meant for you.  It is your responsibility to understand what these messages mean to you personally.  There are several ways you can do this and each one requires patience and a determination to actually listen (vs hear them and move on without action).

  • Feel into Your Body

Do you know how powerful your body is?  Most of us forget because we are so used to criticizing everything wrong with it.  I am here to tell you that your body holds the answers to so many of your questions and all you have to do is slow down and pay attention.  After your tarot reading, pay attention to how your body reacts to what you are reading/hearing.  Notice any tightness, knots and tension.  Grab your trusty tarot journal and jot down what you experience.  Really tap into your five senses as you do this:  what do you feel and where do you feel it?  What does it look like (e.g. You feel a knot in your stomach:  describe it.  Hard, black, sharp edges)?  Does it have a smell or a taste?  What is it telling you?

  • Meditate

This can be as long or as short as you need.  As you sit in silence (or your preferred method) without distraction, open yourself up to receive your own downloads of inspiration from your higher self.  Meditate on a specific aspect of your tarot reading or listen to your body as mentioned above.  After you finish, make sure you write any ideas, insights and guidance down.

  • Go into Nature

Walking outside (barefoot if possible to really ground into the energy of the Earth) in nature is not only soul-cleansing but one of the easiest ways to reconnect with your intuition.  There really is nothing else to do except enjoy your surroundings.  Look at the trees, listen to the birds, watch the clouds or admire the feeling of your bare feet on the soft grass.  Going outside and really looking at what is around you (again, using your senses) is medicine for your soul.

Revisit Your Reading

When you have really given yourself the time and put in the effort to take action after your reading, go back to your tarot journal.  Look at your initial thoughts and goals.  Write down what has transpired since and note any achievements.  Take account of your feelings as you go back through your journey since the tarot reading and really make the time to celebrate everything you have accomplished (big and small).

You are a powerful being.  My desire is that you understand how you actively create your reality and your life experience every single day.  When you truly understand how tarot can work for you if you put in the work, it has the capacity to elevate your consciousness to another level.  Having faith in the process and knowing that your challenges are opportunities for growth is all you need to create the life you didn’t think was possible.

Did you create a tarot journal?  How did it go?
